Benjamin A. Montgomery, Certified Public Accountant

  Dear Neighbors:

Mount Vernon is more than where I live — it’s where I’ve built my life, raised my family, and planted the seeds of my hopes for the future. I’ve walked these streets for over thirty years, not just as a resident but as a neighbor, a homeowner, and a believer in this city’s potential. Today, I am running for City Comptroller of Mount Vernon — not out of ambition, but out of responsibility.

I am a Certified Public Accountant, and I carry with me a wealth of experience shaped by years of academic discipline and hands-on financial stewardship. My professional journey has taught me more than just numbers — it has trained me to listen, to plan with precision, and to lead with integrity. I have managed multimillion-dollar budgets, conducted audits, streamlined financial operations, and advised organizations on how to thrive with limited resources. In every role I’ve held, I’ve seen how sound financial leadership can bring healing, stability, and hope.

Mount Vernon is in crisis. Our city is struggling to honor its debts. That fact alone has dangerous implications — not just on paper, but in people lives. When a city’s financial foundation begins to crack, it is the residents who feel the tremors: city services falter, public workers go unpaid, schools suffer, and confidence in leadership erodes. The weight of fiscal mismanagement eventually falls on the backs of those least able to carry it.

That cannot continue!

I believe — deeply — that this moment in our city’s history requires someone with more than good intentions. It requires competence. It requires transparency. It requires someone who understands not only how we got here, but how to lead us out. I know how to read the story our budget is telling, and more importantly, I know how to rewrite that story — with discipline, strategy, and fairness.

This campaign is not just about balancing books — it’s about restoring trust. It’s about ushering in a new era of accountability where residents can believe again that their city is being cared for.

Let’s stop the bleeding. Let’s restore confidence. Let’s rebuild Mount Vernon — together.

With resolve,

Benjamin A. Montgomery, CPA

"To heal a city, we must first be honest about its wounds. Financial instability is not just a technical issue — it’s a moral one. Because when we fail to manage our finances, we fail to protect our people. I am running for City Comptroller because I have the skills to do the job — and the heart to do it right."

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at bmontgomery@bamcpa.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

“As Comptroller, I will implement a proactive, data-driven approach to financial oversight. First, I will establish a publicly accessible online financial dashboard that shows real-time tracking of city spending, revenues, and contract allocations — giving residents a clear, user-friendly view of how every tax dollar is being used.

Second, I will institute performance-based budgeting, where each department must justify expenditures based on measurable outcomes, not just historical allocations. This helps root out inefficiencies and ensures every dollar supports essential services and community priorities.

Third, I will strengthen internal audit procedures and conduct regular, independent reviews of city departments and vendor contracts. Any irregularities will be flagged immediately, and findings will be published publicly.

Transparency isn’t just about sharing information — it’s about building trust. I will hold regular town hall forums to explain the budget, hear from residents, and provide updates on financial health. By combining smart technology, strong oversight, and open communication, we will safeguard taxpayer money and restore financial confidence in Mount Vernon.”

"I have a proven track record of restoring fiscal integrity and streamlining financial operations in organizations facing similar challenges. My experience includes overseeing complex audits, implementing transparent financial controls, and introducing modern accounting systems that ensure timely reporting and accountability.

In my previous role, I successfully led the turnaround of a municipal finance department that was plagued by overdue audits and poor financial oversight. Within the first year, we completed backlogged audits, restored compliance with state requirements, and improved the city's credit rating. I achieved this by restructuring workflows, hiring and training qualified staff, and fostering a culture of fiscal responsibility and transparency.

For Mount Vernon, I would bring the same disciplined, solutions-focused approach—conducting a thorough financial assessment, deploying real-time monitoring systems, and ensuring that every dollar is tracked and reported accurately. Accountability begins with leadership, and I’m fully prepared to lead by example."

"Yes, I will work independently from the mayor and city council to maintain fiscal accountability, while also fostering a collaborative relationship. Independence is essential to ensuring that financial oversight remains objective, transparent, and guided by the best interests of the public. At the same time, effective fiscal management requires open communication and coordination with elected officials to align on goals, identify risks early, and implement responsible policies. My commitment is to uphold the integrity of the office, provide accurate and unbiased financial reporting, and ensure that public resources are used efficiently and ethically—regardless of political pressure."
